Plane of Focus
An interactive visualization of camera optics where learners adjust settings and see how focus and blur change in a simulated scene.
- Ages Older children and teenagers (editorial estimate)
- Interactive simulation

What kids actually do
Learners adjust camera-related controls—such as aperture, focal length, and focus distance—and watch how the simulated image responds.
They can compare how different settings emphasize subjects near or far from the lens.
We reviewed the public site and core controls; we have not independently validated every visualization against real-world optics.
What kids can learn
These are learning areas the project is designed to support—not guaranteed outcomes.
- Understanding focus, blur, and depth of field in photography
- Exploring introductory optics through visual experimentation
- Connecting camera settings to what appears sharp on screen
Why it's interesting
Photography hooks many teens, and focus is one of the first technical ideas they notice. Plane of Focus makes that relationship visible instead of leaving it buried in a manual.
What parents should know
The creator has noted that some model-generated visualizations may contain inaccuracies. Use the simulation as a discussion starter—not as a scientifically authoritative textbook. An adult who knows basic photography can help separate helpful intuition from simplified or incorrect details.
